June 2010 is traditionally a quieter month for banding with most migrants having moved on, resident breeding birds on territory or on nests and few hatch year birds yet out of the nest but with the increased effort this year we still processed over a thousand birds of 37 species!

Our June total was dominated by Cedar Waxwings which flood the Farm to feed on ripening elderberries and Willow Flycatchers which arrived back in good numbers and seem to be fitz-bewing from every available bush. We banded our first Eastern Kingbird and Western Tanager of the season and a precocious hatch year Starling which made for some great photographs and was a new species banded for the site. Another 11 Lazuli Buntings colour banded took our total this year to 16 and we are asking birders in the park to report sightings of colour banded birds to try to assess the preferred habitats of these gorgeous birds and their disbursement throughout the park.

The star of the show this month was our Brewer’s Sparrow banded at the Home Farm study site and there were several notable rare bird sightings with Ash-throated Flycatcher and Yellow-breasted Chat recorded in the park.
