Dave Watson sent this great photo of a juvenile Killdeer from a new area in his neighbourhood called “Blackburn lagoon”. The area has recently been open to the public after an extensive transformation from two waste settling ponds to an oasis for birds. Always nice to hear stories of habitat restoration rather then degradation!

Like many plovers, Killdeer’s are well-known for their distraction displays of feigning injury with a ‘broken-wing’ to lead predators away from nests. They are also known for aggressively displaying and running at larger hoofed animals which threaten nests and eggs.
