Safeguarding Your Windows for Birds (Be Creative!)

Window strikes are something that you can easily and inexpensively prevent with a bit of creativity.

These examples of “Zen Curtains” are easy to install, long lasting and highly effective. The BirdSavers website gives directions to build your own, or order from them from Acopian BirdSavers.

And If You're Really Artistic!

Each year, about 10,000 birds die at University of British Columbia (De Groot et al. unpublished data) by colliding with clear and reflective glass.

Environment and Climate Change Canada conducted bird collision research in collaboration with UBC to  better understand and mitigate this ongoing tragedy. In response UBC developed Bird Friendly Design Guidelines for Buildings as part of the emerging Green Building Plan.

Now a UBC PhD candidate, Lora Zosia Moon, has designed a window application as part of a competition to reduce fatal bird collisions. The SEEDS Sustainability Program project, installed on the CIRS Building, also tells the story of bird biodiversity on campus.
